(05-19) Amendments to the Solid Bulk Cargoes Code

The Maritime Safety Committee, at its 101st session (5 to 14 June 2019), approved the amendments to the SBC Code.

The amendments (05-19) to the IMSBC Code, as adopted by IMO Resolution MSC.462(101) are effective from 01 January 2021. However, the amendments can be implemented voluntarily from 01 January 2020.

The amendments include the below listed cargoes that have been added to the Group B, as per IMO Resolution  MSC.1/Circ.1395/Rev.4. These are:

  • Flue Dust, containing Lead and Zinc
  • Matte containing Copper and Lead
  • Zinc Oxide-Enriched Flue Dust
  • Metal Sulphide concentrates, self-heating UN 3190
  • Seed Cakes and Other Residues of Processed Oily Vegetables

Additionally, the Characteristics table, has been replaced for each individual cargo scheduled to clarify the Hazard Classification (subsidiary hazard(s) and MHB) and the existing individual schedule for ‘Seed Cake (non-hazardous)’ has been deleted.

New additions also include a new Group A cargo schedule for Bauxite Fines and a corresponding test procedure for determining transportable moisture limit (TML) of Bauxite cargoes.

Act now

Ship Owners/ Managers/ Operators of vessels carrying solid bulk cargoes are invited to take into consideration the amendments to the IMSBC Code.  In case requested, Dromon may include the new cargoes on a voluntary basis by re-issuing the IMSBC Certificate of the vessel prior the date into force.
