Amendments to Guidelines for Developing Operation and Maintenance manuals for lifeboat systems

The amendments include the revised requirements of IMO for the maintenance, examination, testing and repair of lifeboats as well as the weekly and monthly maintenance.

The Maritime Safety Committee, at its 98th session, approved the Amendments to the Guidelines for developing operation and maintenance manuals for lifeboat systems, as per MSC.1/Circ.1205.
The amendments
- In paragraph 1, the last sentence [“Detailed maintenance/repair work should be conducted by the manufacturer’s representative or a person appropriately trained and certified by the manufacturer for the work in accordance with MSC.1/Circ.1206.”] is changed to:
“Detailed maintenance/repair work should be conducted in accordance with the Requirements for maintenance, thorough examination, operational testing, overhaul and repair of lifeboats and rescue boats, launching appliances and release gear (resolution MSC.402(96)).”
- The text of paragraph 3.1.4 [“routine inspection and maintenance of the lifeboat system”] related to the items to be included in the manual of a lifeboat system, is replaced by the following:
“weekly and monthly inspection and routine maintenance of the lifeboat system.”

Act now
Manufacturers and approved service suppliers shall take into consideration the above amendments.
Ship Owners/ Managers/ Operators shall ensure that the routine inspection and maintenance of the lifeboat system is carried out as per above amendments (i.e. weekly and monthly).
