Guidance on the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 on Board by China

The People’s Republic of China has submitted to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) “Guidance on the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 on Board”.

The People’s Republic of China has submitted to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) “Guidance on the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 on Board” Circular Letter No.4221.

The document provides recommendations and guidance, based on relevant documents developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), together with the experience gained by shipping companies, on the prevention and control of COVID-19 onboard ships, and on personal protection of crew members.

The guideline provides information and recommendation to ships and seafarers, inter alia:

  1. guidelines for the ships’ management system, including training and drill;
  2. prevention and control measures on board ships;
  3. guidelines for personal protection of crew members;
  4. emergency response when suspected COVID-19 case(s) identified on board cargo and passenger ships;
  5. reporting procedures of suspected case(s);
  6. adjusting crew members’ mental health during the epidemic period; and
  7. recommendation on region-specific, multi-level approach to prevention and control COVID-10 on passenger ships.

Act now

Ship Owners/ Managers/ Operators should use the above Guideline and recommendations as a general practice on board their vessels in order to make sure for the implementation of proper measures, protection of the crew and prevent Coronavirus spreading.
